We are pleased to announce the official publication on ScienceDirect of the scientific article “Scaling-calibration parameter for shape-reconstruction using different FBG arrays configurations on single-mode optical fibres”, published in Sensors and Actuators A: Physical, an international journal dedicated to research and development in the field of physical transducers.
The journal brings together multidisciplinary research on solid-state devices for the transduction of physical signals, providing a relevant scientific platform for innovative developments in sensing technologies.

The newly published study explores the feasibility of reconstructing the neutral axis of a structure using different configurations of single-mode optical fibres equipped with embedded Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor arrays. The research focuses on a specific structural configuration in which several geometrical conditions normally required by shape-sensing theory are not fully satisfied. The results demonstrate that, under these conditions, the introduction of a fitting correction parameter is necessary to achieve an accurate reconstruction of the structure’s shape.
An important outcome of the study is the interpretation of this fitting parameter as the combination of two distinct contributions related to the processes of scaling and calibration. The analysis further shows that the parameter depends on the structural dimensions and on the distance between the FBG arrays, while remaining independent of the applied deformation. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the factors affecting shape reconstruction using FBG-based sensing systems and provide useful insights for the development and application of optical fibre sensing technologies.
The work has also been made possible thanks to the research activities carried out within REFEST, contributing to the project’s broader efforts to advance innovative technologies and research for the fishing sector.
