Work packages

REFEST is a 36 months (3 years) project from May 2024 to April 2026 and it is organized in 7 main work packages including different activites.

WP1

Retrofit requirements of selected fishing vessels. Impact assessment on marine environment & its biodiversity

Objectives:

  • Identify the opportunities and barriers of selected technologies to their deployment in ships.
  • Define case studies and potential retrofitting solutions to be implemented in each one.
  • Measure and describe impact on marine environment & its biodiversity.
  • Collect data analysis and strategic guidelines for emissions, underwater noise and other environmental parameters measurement campaigns (before and after vessels modifications) .

Simulation & design of Hull appendages. Sensors’ integration

Objectives:

  • Design the hull appendages to significantly improve the hydrodynamics of current ships.

Battery packs, PV panels, electrical power management

Objectives:

  • Increase ship efficiency awareness among ship operators and crew with a benchmark of before and after retrofit energy consumption via Sankey diagrams.
  • Integrate the Battery and other energy efficient retrofit technologies with the energy management system, focusing on microgrids and charging point scenarios.
  • Improve the efficiency and the useful life of the battery

Hybrid Engine, Eco-driving & air lubrication solutions

Objectives:

  • Implement an advanced propulsion system a
  • Designan air lubrication system suitable for the hull drag reduction.

Retrofit solutions scale-up and integration in fishing vessels

Objectives:

  • Scale-up all the solutions optimized in WP1 to WP4 to be deployed in the three ships.
  • GEMI, LFPA and TUCO will retrofit one of their ships to reduce their current GHG emissions up to 40%.
  • A full validation in real sea water will be performed with different sea conditions.

Environmental, economic, social, & regulatory gap assessment

Objectives:

  • Study the environmental suitability & impact of the target retrofitting solutions by a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cost analysis (LCC), Social Acceptance and Social Awareness Assessment.
  • Determine overall economic effects and benefits of implementing the developed
  • Ensure that REFEST’s proposed solutions comply with the relevant regulatory, toxicology, and Health & Safety landscape.

Dissemination, Communication, Exploitation, Market Validation, Standards, Training and Skills Assessment

Objectives:

  • Disseminate the results and communicate the project and its relevance making all well known to all relevant stakeholders, maximizing the expected impacts of REFEST
  • Maximize the exploitation of the project results to the benefit of the REFEST partners and to improve the competitiveness of the EU Blue economy
  • Secure knowledge transfer and protect the Intellectual property rights (IPR)

Project Management

Objectives:

  • Ensure the management procedures are implemented through Project Management and Administration structure to coordinate all the bodies involved
  • Carry out a comprehensive project management activity to manage and optimise the application of resources in the consortium
